Unakoti Rock Carvings
About this activity
Unakoti means 'one less than a crore'. It is an open-air art gallery deep in the forest featuring massive bas-relief carvings of Shiva and other deities on the rock face.
The central Shiva head (Unakotiswara Kal Bhairava) is 30 feet tall. Dating back to the 7th-9th centuries, its origin is shrouded in mystery and legend. It is often called the Angkor Wat of the Northeast.
Walking among these colossal faces covered in moss is eerie and wonderful.
