Kathmandu

Overview

Kathmandu is the vibrant capital of Nepal and the cultural heart of the Himalayas. Located in the scenic Kathmandu Valley, the city sits about 1,400 meters above sea level, surrounded by green hills and ancient settlements. 🏔️

🏙️ Known for its beautiful temples, lively streets, and colorful festivals, Kathmandu feels like a living museum. Narrow alleys are filled with markets, incense, street food, and centuries-old shrines where locals and travelers gather every day. 🕯️🥟

🌏 For centuries, the city served as an important trade and cultural bridge between India and Tibet, which created a unique mix of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. 🕉️🪷

🎒 Today, Kathmandu is also famous as the gateway to Himalayan adventures, welcoming trekkers and explorers before they travel to famous mountain regions like Everest and Annapurna. 🌄

📖 The history of Kathmandu goes back more than 2,000 years. According to legend, the valley was once a huge lake until the Buddhist figure Manjushri cut a gorge through the hills, draining the water and making the land suitable for settlement. 🌊⛰️

🏛️ Kathmandu flourished during the Malla Dynasty between the 12th and 18th centuries. During this golden period, kings built stunning palaces and temples, many of which still stand today in Kathmandu Durbar Square. 🎭

👑 In the 18th century, the valley was unified by Prithvi Narayan Shah, who made Kathmandu the capital of modern Nepal.
